It's easy to pack the sketchbook, brush roll, watercolour box and a few other bits and pieces and occasionally they'll be useful on holiday. I am far better these days at just enjoying some sunshine and watching the world go by.
We recently visited Halkidiki and stayed at the Sani Dunes resort. In early May the normal daytime temperature is OK but sometimes the wind picked up. On other occasions the sun shone and I'd had enough sunshine. I liked the opportunity to do some painting in the afternoons. Painting on holiday is a quicker, looser process not least because the temperature makes the paints dry a little quicker.
The thing about capturing the views seemed to me to be the blues of the pool, the skies and the reflections in the water. This first painting captured the scene early in the morning with a cloudy sky and everything set up for the day ahead.
I wanted to capture the sky in this painting and it worked out quite well. I like the palette with the creams and the deeper greens.
This last one was the view from one of the restaurants at breakfast. I really liked the lines of parasols and sunbeds and its worked well - reminds me a little of the video for Another Brick In The Wall for some reason! The parasols at the top kind of makes the painting for me by anchoring where I am and adding perspective. This may be one I revisit with a larger painting -it has some drama. I could have done a better job by using some masking fluid to make the parasols pop even more and have a crisper line on the horizon.
