Cormorant Silhouette

This is a painting in watercolour, gouache and ink. I was inspired by the strength of the silhouette of the bird in a photograph I'd taken at Kingsbury Water Park. It's easily recognisable and I wanted to create a decorative background to show it off but which reflected the amazing colours which cormorants show in strong sunlight on their plumage . I like the different way that ink acts in a wash (much more detailed finish) compared to watercolour. I also wanted to create a detailed texture in the background with abstract shapes, some subtle Cormorant-related text, Thicker applications of gouache and using gold ink to creat a shimmer in some places.
